Turning cast iron - Challenges and solutions
Practical tips for efficient machining of cast iron
Turning cast iron is indispensable in modern manufacturing – especially for the production of components that are subject to high thermal and mechanical loads is cast iron the preferred material. Due to its material properties, cast iron offers numerous advantages, but also poses specific challenges, particularly in the series production of rotationally symmetrical components, for example in automotive or mechanical engineering.
In our white paper, we focus on the machining of cast iron with spheroidal graphite (EN GJS). The selection of the appropriate turning tool, the substrates used and the geometry of the indexable inserts have a direct impact on the quality of the workpiece to be machined and the service life of the tool.
What matters when turning cast iron:
- Selection of the carbide grade and adaptation of the machining strategy to the cast iron grade
- Suitable workpiece clamping to ensure dimensional accuracy and surface quality
- Selection of optimised cutting inserts, substrates and geometries for long tool life and reduced costs
- Avoidance of typical sources of error such as vibrations, residual stresses or tool breakage through targeted process optimisation
